About the College of Economics at Xiamen University
The College of Economics at Xiamen University (XMU) comprises the School of Economics (SOE), the Wang Yanan Institute for Studies in Economics (WISE), and the Paula and Gregory Chow Institute for Studies in Economics (Chow Institute). Its origins date back to the Business Division established at the founding of XMU in 1921, marking a long tradition of excellence in teaching and research. The economics discipline at XMU was significantly shaped in its early years by Wang Yanan, a renowned economist and the university’s president for 19 years, who is celebrated for translating Adam Smith’s The Wealth of Nations and Karl Marx’s Das Kapital into Chinese.
In September 1981, China’s Ministry of Education approved the elevation of the Department of Economics to the School of Economics (SOE), the first of its kind to be established in a top-tier university in mainland China. Since its founding, SOE has maintained a leading national reputation in economics, finance and statistics, while striving to become an internationally recognized center for teaching and research. For more information about SOE, please visit https://soe.xmu.edu.cn/.
Economics research at Xiamen University was significantly advanced in 2005 with the establishment of the Wang Yanan Institute for Studies in Economics (WISE). As a research-oriented institute, WISE was founded to modernize economics and finance research and education in China. It excels in fields such as econometrics, statistics, finance, experimental economics, and law and economics. WISE is dedicated to frontier research, high-quality teaching, and extensive international academic cooperation. For more information about WISE, please visit https://wise.xmu.edu.cn/.
In 2016, world-renowned economist Professor Gregory Chow and his wife, Paula K. Chow, generously donated $10 million to XMU to support economics education and research in China. That same year, the university established the Gregory and Paula Chow Foundation for Education in Economics, and the Gregory and Paula Chow Center for Economic Research (Chow Center). In 2022, the center was elevated to the Paula and Gregory Chow Institute for Studies in Economics (Chow Institute). The Chow Institute is devoted to nurturing world-class economists and producing leading academic research, with the mission of becoming a premier hub for academic cooperation and international exchange in China, Asia, and the world. For more information about the Chow Institute, please visit https://chow.xmu.edu.cn/.
Today, the School of Economics, WISE, and the Chow Institute work in close collaboration as the College of Economics. Together, they are solidifying Xiamen University’s position as a major center for research and education in economics, finance, and statistics in the Asia-Pacific region.
